Rigorous Delineation + BOS 100® + CAT 100 = Remedial Success at Chemical Plan

Three or four years ago, long term efforts at RPI to explore synergies of biological technology and BOS 100 culminated in CAT 100. The objectives of this research included thwarting oxidation of the nano-scale metallic iron-carbon alloy embedded in the product and expansion of its application portfolio to encompass mixed plumes and recalcitrant contaminants. In most applications, BOS 100 by itself works very well. At sites where DNAPL is present or, even ubiquitous — extending the active life of the metallic iron-carbon alloy can become the tipping point between success and failure.

The project that we are highlighting today was one of the very first to take advantage of CAT 100 technology to reduce the cost and increase the efficiency of BOS 100 at heavily contaminated sites.

The challenges at this site included difficult geology (tight clays), a mixed plume containing chlorinated solvents, petroleum and aliphatic hydrocarbons, and the presence of DNAPL. Rigorous delineation of impacts horizontally and vertically was achieved through meticulous Remediation Design Characterization (RDC) efforts. A substantial number of soil and groundwater samples were analyzed pro bono at the RPI Group Project Support Laboratory in Golden, Colorado. A surgical injection regimen utilizing both BOS 100 and CAT 100 produced excellent results replete with a significant reduction of groundwater VOC contamination and eradication of DNAPL.

The final phase of this project (reduction of source impact) is to be completed in 2020. For additional details regarding this project, please click here.
